Melville, NY, August 27, 2014 – AIP Publishing and Applied Physics Letters are pleased to announce the appointment of Reuben T. Collins, PhD, as the Journal’s new Editor-in-Chief beginning September 1, 2014.

“Taking on leadership of the most highly cited journal in Applied Physics* is both a great honor and an exciting challenge. My vision for Applied Physics Letters is focused on its two constituents: its cadre of loyal authors and the scientists who read their contributions. I look forward to working with the editorial board and AIP Publishing to deepen the Journal’s historical strengths while attracting submission of the most important and exciting developments in applied physics from across the globe,” commented Professor Collins.

Professor Collins earned his PhD in applied physics at the California Institute of Technology in 1985. For the next 10 years he rose through the ranks at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY, ending his time there as Technical Consultant to the VP of Services, Applications, and Solutions. Taking up an academic appointment in 1994, Professor Collins moved to the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) in Golden, CO, where he is currently Associate Director of the Renewable Energy Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (REMRSEC) and Professor of Physics.

A major component of Professor Collins’ research at CSM involves the materials physics of renewable energy systems and in particular, photovoltaics. He is also exploring new ways of integrating optical elements onto a chip.  Throughout his career the properties of nanostructured and lower dimensional systems have been an underlying theme of his scholarship. He has been widely recognized for his contributions to the field through numerous awards.  Professor Collins is a dedicated educator and has mentored many undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers.

Professor Collins holds four patents and is a prolific contributor to the literature with more than 130 scientific articles to his credit. He has been actively involved with the organization of numerous international conferences and is a frequent invited speaker.

“We are delighted to have Professor Collins assume the leadership role on our flagship journal. We also wish to recognize the distinguished service of Dr. Nghi Lam,” noted John Haynes, CEO of AIP Publishing. “Dr. Lam has served as the Editor-in-Chief of Applied Physics Letters for 20 years, overseeing the extraordinary growth in submissions to the Journal from a modest 3,700 manuscripts in 1994 to an impressive 12,400 in 2013. By consistently maintaining high standards of publication and rapidly delivering quality content to the community, Dr. Lam leaves the Journal well positioned to serve the community for years to come.”
