GOLDEN, Colo., April 24, 2015 – Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Professor Michael Kaufman has been appointed dean of the College of Applied Science and Engineering (CASE).

Provost Terence Parker made the announcement at the Faculty Forum held Wednesday, April 22. “Support for his candidacy as dean was broad across the faculty in CASE,” Parker said, “and we are confident that his leadership will be instrumental in moving this college forward.”

“I am excited to serve as the CASE dean and to work with the new administration and faculty as we collectively and strategically lead the institution forward,” said Kaufman. “We have world-class faculty, professional and caring staff, and truly outstanding students, and I’m honored to be a part of the team that constitutes Mines.”

CASE is comprised of the departments of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, and Physics, as well as interdisciplinary graduate programs in Materials Science and Nuclear Science and Engineering.

Kaufman has served as interim dean of the college since October 2014. He joined the Mines faculty in 2007, and became department head of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering in 2010. He served as director of the Electron Microscopy Laboratory until he took the position of interim dean and continues to serve as the director of the NSF I/UCRC Center for Advanced Non-Ferrous Structural Alloys.

Kaufman earned his BS and PhD degrees in metallurgical engineering from the University of Illinois in Urbana. He taught at the University of Washington from 1986 to 1980, and at the University of Florida from 1989 to 2004, where he reached the rank of professor and associate chair. From 2004 to 2007, Kaufman was professor and chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of North Texas.

Mines shifted its academic structure to the college system in 2012 in an effort to promote excellence in research and academic degree programs and to strengthen collaborations across departments. The other two colleges in addition to CASE are the College of Engineering and Computational Sciences and the College of Earth Resource Sciences and Engineering.
