ARCS Foundation supports college scientists in Colorado

GOLDEN, CO., Nov. 3, 2014–The Colorado chapter of the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Foundation (ARCS) will give $233,000 in scholar awards to 46 exemplary students attending Colorado universities at an annual luncheon hosted by Colorado School of Mines on Nov. 5.

Scholar awards will be granted to undergraduate and graduate students studying science, mathematics, medicine or engineering at Mines, Colorado State University and the University of Colorado.

A Mines student received the first scholar award from the ARCS Foundation Colorado Chapter, and for decades since then the Colorado chapter of ARCS has been helping Colorado college students succeed by providing financial support and encouragement. Since its founding in 1958, the ARCS Foundation has awarded funds exceeding $90 million to more than 9,000 ARCS Scholars at 54 leading U.S. universities, including more than $3 million to promising Colorado students. Students at Mines have collectively received more than $600,000 in awards from the ARCS Foundation since the organization’s founding.

“Every day, I see the financial challenges students and their families face,” said Jill Robertson, director of Mines financial aid. “These financial awards from the ARCS Foundation give scholars the resources they need to earn their college degrees when realizing that dream might not have been otherwise possible.”

Ten Mines students have been selected as 2014–2015 ARCS Foundation Scholars and will share $50,000 in awards:

  1. Nicole Neals – senior, environmental engineering
  2. Ryan Beethe – junior, engineering physics
  3. Nohemi Almarez – junior, civil engineering
  4. Matthew Hayne – PhD candidate, metallurgical and materials engineering
  5. Austin Bistline – senior, geophysical engineering
  6. Devin Jorstad – senior, computer science
  7. McKyler Korth – sophomore, mechanical engineering
  8. Samuel Friedman – sophomore, electrical engineering
  9. Mason Traylor – sophomore, computer science
  10. Ryan Czarny – junior, biochemistry
