Collins to deliver Mines Faculty Senate Distinguished Lecture March 25

GOLDEN, Colo., Feb. 25, 2015 – The 2015 Colorado School of Mines Faculty Senate Distinguished Lecturer, Physics Professor Reuben Collins, will present “Confessions of a Naïve Editor-in-Chief,” at 4 p.m., March 25, in the Student Center Ballrooms.

In 2014, Collins became editor-in-chief of the journal Applied Physics Letters, published by the American Institute of Physics. During his talk, he plans to discuss what he’s learned at the helm of APL as well as invite questions from the audience about scientific publishing.

Collins’ research interests include fabrication and properties of quantized structures, photovoltaics, novel light emitting materials and devices, microelectronics, silicon compatible optoelectronics, plasmonics, scanning probe microscopy, nanolithography, and physics education. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics from the University of Northern Iowa, and his master’s and PhD in applied physics from California Institute of Technology.

The Faculty Senate Distinguished Lecturer Award, established in 1990, gives Mines faculty the opportunity to recognize their outstanding colleagues. They select lecturers admired and respected as educators, who have stimulating ideas to convey and an ability to communicate those ideas effectively.
