Department of State International Unconventional Resources Regulator Training Program to be held at Mines

GOLDEN, Colo., Jan. 3, 2014 – The Colorado School of Mines Unconventional Natural Gas and Oil Institute (UNGI) will host an international training program focused on sustainable development of unconventional resources for regulators and policymakers by invitation from the U.S. Department of State.

The classroom and field-based program, which runs on Jan. 13-18, will introduce attendees to unconventional oil and gas geoscience and petroleum engineering technologies; environmental challenges and the techniques to overcome them; geohazards including induced seismicity; health, safety and social responsibility and the role of government, academia and industry collaboration in the responsible development of these resources.

UNGI, directed by Mines professor Dr. Azra N. Tutuncu, is comprised of technical, environmental and regulatory experts who work with industry, the state and federal government and the public to address environmental and regulatory concerns and to ensure safe and responsible oil and gas production.

UNGI received a grant from the U.S. Department of State Unconventional Gas Technical Engagement Program (UGTEP) to provide this training program. UGTEP was launched by Department of State in 2010 to help countries seeking to identify, utilize and develop their unconventional resources in a safe and economical manner.
