Rebecca Flintoft, associate vice president of student life at Colorado School of Mines, is a primary co-editor and chapter author on a new book about campus violence.
“Violence Goes to College: The authoritative guide to prevention, intervention, and response (3rd ed.)” was published earlier this summer by Charles C. Thomas Publisher Ltd.
In addition to serving as a co-editor of the entire book, Flintoft wrote the book’s preface and a chapter on gender-based violence. She also contributed to chapters on college violence history and prevention, procedures and policies around violence.
“This third edition of the book is more than one-half new content compared to the second edition in 2010. We added or expanded content on institutional culture and human infrastructure to respond to campus violence, as well as the impacts of alcohol, free speech and public protest, and social media on campus violence,” Flintoft said. “The book includes in-depth explorations of particular strains of campus violence, including gender-based violence, suicide, hate crimes and hateful violence, cyberbullying, hazing and mass shootings. We frame violence within the complexity of sociocultural, historical, legal and institutional influences that impact our society and college campuses today.”
Fellow co-editors were Christopher Bollinger, professor of communication and director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Texas Lutheran University; police and public safety psychologist John Nicoletti; international mental health and suicide prevention expert Sally Spencer-Thomas; and psychologist Mariya Dvoskina of Nicoletti-Flater Associates.
Flintoft joined Mines in 2007 and has served in a variety of roles, including assistant vice president of student services, deputy Title IX coordinator, director of auxiliary services and director of residence life before becoming associate vice president of student life in 2017. At Mines, she leads Campus Life and Student Success (CLASS), a team dedicated to inspiring and supporting students to climb to new heights of success and learning.
She previously worked at the University of Colorado Boulder and Heidelberg College. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Kalamazoo College and a master’s degree in college student personnel from Bowling Green State University.
