GOLDEN, Colo., Feb. 6, 2014 – Colorado School of Mines and the Colorado School of Mines Alumni Association will honor individuals for their career achievements and service to the university during the Celebration of Alumni dinner on April 25 at 6 p.m. in Lockridge Arena.
Mines Distinguished Achievement Awards
Established in 1942, this medal is awarded to alumni of any year in recognition of distinguished career achievements.
Steve Mueller ’75 Bsc Geol Eng
Mr. Mueller is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Southwestern Energy, a position he has held since May 2009. Prior to that, as of June 2, 2008, Mr. Mueller served as the President and Chief Operating Officer of the Company. Mr. Mueller has over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry and has served in multiple operational and managerial roles at Tenneco Oil Company, Fina Oil Company, American Exploration Company, Belco Oil & Gas Company and The Houston Exploration Company.
Candace Sulzbach ’81 Bsc Mineral Eng
Ms. Sulzbach is the faculty advisor to the Mines section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and has taught on campus since 1983, most recently as a teaching professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. She is currently transitioning to retirement. Under her leadership, Mines’ SWE section grew to the largest collegiate section in the U.S. A former project engineer at Exxon’s Facilities Development Division, Sulzbach left the industry to teach and advise civil engineering students at Mines. Honors include the SWE National Faculty Advisor of the Year, the BOT Outstanding Faculty Award, and the 2006 Faculty Senate Distinguished Lecturer.
Mines Medals
The Mines Medal shall be awarded to those persons, whether or not alumni and whether or not members of the close university community, who have rendered unusual and exemplary service to the Colorado School of Mines. Such service may include personal service in any capacity of such character and duration as to rank it as unusual or exemplary. Such service may also include acts of service or contribution not of a personal service nature. It is not expected that career or professional achievement, although likely to be present, will be a qualifying factor in the award.
Anthony F. “Tony” Corbetta ’48 Met E (awarded posthumously)
A lifelong supporter of Oredigger athletics, Mines alumnus Tony Corbetta established an endowed scholarship to benefit varsity athletics. A varsity athlete himself, Tony played football for Mines for a year and a half before his education was interrupted in 1943 by military service in World War II. Returning to Mines in 1946, Corbetta went on to graduate with a metallurgical engineering degree in 1948. Corbetta built a career as a sales engineer with CF&I Steel Corporation, where he worked until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the CSM Alumni Association, served as a reunion volunteer, and was a member of the Heritage Society and President’s Council.
Alfred T. Ireson ’48 Pet Eng
Mr. Ireson holds the distinction of being the longest continuous donor to Mines and a strong supporter of athletics, academics, and alumni programs. He established the Al Ireson and Family Endowed Scholarship Fund. Following his graduation from Mines he went to work for Shell Oil Company. In1984 he retired from his position as Manager of Leasehold Development at the Shell Mining Division.

The alumni association gives this award to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution toward improving the image and enhancing the reputation of the Colorado School of Mines.

The CSMAA Board of Directors presents this award to a young alumnus/na whose accomplishments have reflected favorably on the school and the association. This award is given to an alumnus/na of Mines who has received his or her degree no more than 15 years prior to the date of the award and is not older than 40 years of age at the time of the award.
