Mines announces Presidential Search Committee and plans for engaging community input

GOLDEN, Colo., Nov. 18, 2014 – The Colorado School of Mines Board of Trustees has announced the formation of a search committee to assist in the selection of the next university president. Earlier this month the current president, M.W. Scoggins, announced plans to retire in 2015.

The members of the presidential search committee include:

  • Linda Battalora *– Associate Teaching Professor, Petroleum Engineering
  • Tom Davis * – Professor, Geophysics
  • Tracy Gardner * – Associate Teaching Professor and Assistant Department Head, Chemical & Biological Engineering; past member, Colorado School of Mines Alumni Association Board of Directors
  • Tim Haddon * – Mines Board of Trustees member
  • Tissa Illangasekare – AMAX Distinguished Chair and Professor, Civil & Environmental Engineering (Current Faculty Trustee)
  • Kathryn Johnson – Associate Professor, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science
  • David Matlock – University Emeritus Professor, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering
  • Michelle Mertz – Associate Vice President, University Advancement, Colorado School of Mines Foundation
  • Jerry Miller – Student Trustee
  • Kevin Moore – Dean, College of Engineering & Computational Sciences
  • Derek Morgan – Associate Dean of Students
  • Kamini Singha – Associate Professor, Geology & Geological Engineering; Faculty Senate Executive Committee member
  • Jim Spaanstra, Chair, Mines Board of Trustees
  • Patty Starzer * – CSM Foundation Board of Governors Executive Committee member
  • Richard Truly –Mines Board of Trustees member
  • Kirsten Volpi – Executive Vice President, Finance and Administration

“We greatly appreciate the willingness of this group to assist the board in this critical endeavor and we look forward to hearing their perspectives as faculty, staff, students and alumni during the search process,” said Mines Board of Trustees Chair Jim Spaanstra, who will serve as chair of the presidential search committee.

The board of trustees is also seeking input regarding the desired qualities and characteristics of the next president from a broad cross section of the Mines community. A brief, confidential survey has been developed by the search firm Witt/Kiefer and can be accessed at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CSMPresident.

In addition, the board of trustees is hosting the following forums in ballroom A of the Ben Parker Student Center:

2:30-3:30 p.m.: Students and all community members9-10 a.m.: Administrative faculty and classified staff
