GOLDEN, Colo., May 22, 2015 – Members of the Colorado School of Mines academic faculty have received honors for their exceptional work at the university.
Several distinguished faculty members who announced their retirement during the past academic year have been awarded University Emeritus status for demonstrated exemplary service through distinguished teaching and achievement of national and international recognition through outstanding scholarship by the Mines Board of Trustees:
- Thomas Furtak, University Emeritus Professor of Physics
- Kent Voorhees, University Emeritus Professor of Chemistry and Geochemistry
- John Poate, Emeritus Senior Vice President of Colorado School of Mines. He was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree.
The Board of Trustees’ Outstanding Faculty Award was created to “recognize a faculty member who has made a significant positive impact on student’s learning, with special emphasis on teaching outside the classroom:”
- Toni Lefton, Teaching Professor, Liberal Arts and International Studies
The Dean’s Excellence Award recognizes a full-time tenured or tenure track academic faculty member who has demonstrated significant or meritorious achievement in teaching and scholarship:
- Lincoln Carr, Professor, Physics
The CSM Alumni Teaching Award is provided by the CSM Alumni Association and is presented to recognize superior teaching at the undergraduate level over a period of several years and to provide encouragement and incentive for teaching achievement:
- Matt Liberatore, Associate Professor, Chemical Engineering
- Patrick Kohl, Teaching Professor, Physics
The Alfred E. Jenni Faculty Fellowship is awarded to a faculty member based on track record of scholarship in educational research and development; reputation among students for strong dedication and concern toward their learning, and a vision of how the individual will contribute to institution-wide enhancements in education and how this vision can be translated into viable actions:
- Junko Munakata Marr, Associate Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering
The “Excellence in Research Award” was established to recognize Colorado School of Mines research-active faculty members for their outstanding research accomplishments. Up to two awards are presented each academic year. Selection is made on the basis of the significance and quality of research and creative achievements.
- Senior Research Excellence: Tracy Camp, Professor, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
- Junior Research Excellence: Ryan O’Hayre, Professor, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
