Mines founding sponsor of the National Academies Unconventional Hydrocarbon Roundtable

GOLDEN, Colo., Oct. 9, 2015 – Colorado School of Mines is a founding sponsor of the newly-formed National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Unconventional Hydrocarbon Roundtable, a neutral forum that aims to assist in informing decision making about development of resources such as shale oil and natural gas.

Mines joins representatives from government, industry, academia, and non-governmental and international organizations, and will examine issues related to unconventional hydrocarbon resource development upstream, midstream, and downstream.

Department of Geology and Geological Engineering Professor Wendy Harrison will serve as Mines’ roundtable representative.

Roundtable members will meet regularly to critically examine and communicate facts and data regarding the scientific, engineering, health and safety, regulatory, economic, and societal aspects of unconventional hydrocarbon development. They will identify and help to advance activities valuable to key stakeholders and assist in informing decision making about resource development.

Mines was invited to join the roundtable based on the university’s reputation in science and engineering as it relates to earth, energy and the environment.
