GOLDEN, Colo., April 26, 2013 – Students in Colorado School of Mines’ McBride Honors Program in Public Affairs placed first in the inaugural Rocky Mountain Honors Symposium held April 20 on the Mines campus.
The event featured a competition among 140 honors students from nine universities from Colorado and Wyoming who were challenged to present a new solution to an environmental issue.
The Mines team (pictured, from left, Katie Huckfeldt, Bradley Wilson, John Michael Angle, Lucy Orsi, Alec Thomson and Katie Williams) developed a proposal to encourage the university to commit to making water recycling a priority in future construction projects on campus.
“The Honors Symposium highlighted the important relationship between engineering and policy that is so often over-looked. The McBride students were tasked with not only devising a technological fix to an environmental problem, but they became involved in the complex legislation of both the university and the state of Colorado," Huckfeldt said.
The symposium’s “traveling trophy” will reside at Mines’ McBride house for the coming year.
