GOLDEN, Colo., Oct. 3, 2013 – Colorado School of Mines will be opening its doors to the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS) come spring 2014. CGS is temporarily located in Jefferson County after a recent move from Denver. Next year, they will be located in the 11,800-square-foot building at 1801 19th St., formerly home to the county’s environmental health department.
CGS’s move to Mines has been anticipated since February when the survey became a part of Mines. Formerly a part of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources, the governor and the legislature transferred CGS to Mines.
“When the state approached Mines concerning CGS earlier this year, it seemed like a natural fit for the staff to be integrated with the school,” Mines president Bill Scoggins said. “The survey does outstanding work, and our goal has always been to help leverage common expertise and interests to better serve Colorado.”
Moving the staff to Golden and eventually to the Mines campus will allow both organizations to directly collaborate on joint projects.
Karen Berry, acting state geologist and director of CGS said the staff was “excited to move to campus and fully become a part of the Mines community.”
“Everyone at Mines from the administration to the faculty and staff have been really helpful and we feel very welcome,” Berry said.
There will be a formal open house when the new facility is ready in the spring.
