New Mines scholarship aims to make college a reality for Colorado’s brightest, financially challenged students
GOLDEN, Colo., May 1, 2014 – The fall 2014 incoming freshman class at Colorado School of Mines is the first to benefit from a new scholarship offered by the university designed to help Colorado’s brightest students with high financial need to attend Mines tuition-free.
Accepted Colorado residents who are Pell-eligible and qualify for an institutional merit-based scholarship will receive support from the university’s new Colorado Scholars program. This program awards a four-year scholarship that fills the gap between what these high financial need students receive in grants and scholarships and the cost of tuition and fees at Mines.
"As a focused engineering and science research university, our tuition rate is reflective of the high operating costs associated with delivering world-class STEM degree programs. Utilizing a portion of our state funding for the Colorado Scholars program reflects our commitment to help ensure Mines remains affordable for students with high financial need,” said Mines President M.W. Scoggins.
Mines received a record-breaking 13,115 applications for roughly 950 freshman spots and 150 transfer spots for the 2014-15 academic year. With an average ACT score of 30 and an unweighted high school GPA of 3.8 on a 4.0 scale, Mines’ incoming students rank in the top 5 percent of high school students across the nation.
“May 1st is the national candidate reply date or deadline to ‘commit’ to college. As we approached that important date, we actively communicated with our admitted students and our numbers are looking very strong right now with commitments exceeding our expectations by 4 to 5 percent,” said Heather Boyd, associate vice president of enrollment management at Mines.
