Software gift sets students up for career success

Colorado School of Mines students analyze oil and gas reservoirs with the same skill as industry professionals thanks to a multi-year license gift of software from Schlumberger, commercially-valued at $114 million. The software is used in undergraduate and graduate level classes in petroleum engineering, geological engineering and geology by hundreds of Mines students every year and is valuable for faculty research as well.

Chemical engineering graduate students Thomas Charlton, Vishal Srivastava and Yan Wang use Schlumberger software

“We appreciate Schlumberger’s generosity and continued support of our students by providing this state-of-the-art software,” said Colorado School of Mines President Paul C. Johnson. “This gift provides students with access to tools that will position them well for internships and careers in the oil and gas industry while also helping our faculty conduct research to advance the field.”

Industry-standard software packages for oil and gas reservoir characterization are highly specialized and beyond typical higher education software budgeting, so the Schlumberger gift is a major enhancement to the high-tech facilities already available in the petroleum engineering and geological engineering departments.

“I use the software in my own research and am constantly evaluating new ways to integrate it into the courses I teach and the research I do at Mines,” said Bruce Trudgill, associate professor, department of geology and geological engineering. “The software allows our students to visualize and interpret geological features fully in three dimensions, providing a unique academic learning experience and a significant head start when they enter the petroleum industry.”

The Schlumberger software is a tool that helps make Mines a global leader in integrated reservoir studies and helps our students enter their professions with advanced competencies.
