Walton wins Young Rock Engineer Award
Gabriel Walton, associate professor of geology and geological engineering at Colorado School of Mines, has been honored with the 2024 Young Rock Engineer Award.
Presented by the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, the award is given to a society member under the age of 40 who has worked in rock engineering within a relevant industry for a period of five to 10 years. Honorees are recognized for their achievements in pioneering the use of materials and/or methods, contributing to sustainable engineering practices, contributing to and the promotion of the engineering profession and the novelty of their contribution to solving engineering problems and/or developing original design solutions.
Walton, who has been a member of the Mines faculty since 2015, is the associate department head for Geology and Geological Engineering. He is a board member and vice president of the American Rock Mechanics Association, chairing the organization’s 2024 conference in Golden, Colorado. Walton serves as associate editor of the journal Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering and holds a PhD and bachelor’s degree from Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada.
